Shocking Health Impact: Study Links Fracking to Higher Asthma Rates and Childhood Lymphoma

A new study conducted by public health researchers from the University of Pittsburgh has revealed a concerning connection between fracking and adverse health effects. The study, commissioned by former Gov. Tom Wolf in 2019, finally sheds light on the public health impact of the gas drilling industry that has long been swept under the rug.

The study, which cost $2.5 million, aimed to examine the incidence of certain diseases in areas close to active gas wells compared to areas where drilling is not an issue. While it was not designed to directly attribute specific illnesses to fracking, the findings are alarming. People of all ages residing near heavily drilled areas in Western Pennsylvania experienced higher rates of severe asthma when compared to those in unaffected regions. Additionally, children in these areas were found to have an increased likelihood of developing a rare form of lymphoma.

This Pennsylvania study is not the first of its kind. Similar research conducted in other parts of the United States has consistently reported elevated rates of asthma, certain cancers, low birth weights, and other health issues among individuals living in proximity to fracking operations. The evidence is mounting and cannot be ignored.

Edward Keyter, a retired pediatrician and member of the study’s advisory board, emphasized the significance of the asthma findings, referring to them as a bombshell. He questioned why anyone should be surprised by these outcomes, directing attention towards lawmakers who have shown a reluctance to acknowledge the impact of drilling.

For years, Pennsylvania has played catch-up in terms of addressing the potential health risks associated with the drilling boom that began between 2005 and 2010. Pro-industry lawmakers hindered progress by rejecting studies focused on public health impact. However, armed with the information from this new study, it is imperative that lawmakers and Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration work together to establish robust regulations to safeguard public health in the face of this massive industrial operation.

The findings bring to light a need for a balanced understanding of the risks and benefits associated with fracking. While the economic advantages are evident, it is crucial not to overlook the potential health consequences for individuals residing near drilling sites. Striking a balance between the economic growth driven by the industry and the well-being of local communities should be the priority.

Moving forward, it is imperative that comprehensive studies continue to be conducted to ascertain the specific health impacts of fracking. There is a pressing need for ongoing research and the implementation of stringent regulations to protect public health. By being proactive rather than reactive, Pennsylvania can ensure the well-being of its citizens while reaping the economic benefits associated with the gas drilling industry.
