Shelter Island 5K Sees Record-Breaking Performance by Green Brothers

Shelter Island, NY – The 24th annual Shelter Island 5K took place on Saturday, attracting a total of 192 determined participants. Despite predictions of foul weather, the event turned out to be a remarkable success, thanks to the outstanding performance of the Green brothers, Jason and Joshua. Jason smashed the previous course record held by Islander Kal Lewis, completing the race in an impressive 15 minutes and 25.04 seconds. Joshua followed closely behind, securing the second-place position with a time of 15 minutes and 43.8 seconds.

Benjamin Segal, a 54-year-old from New York City, finished in third place with a time of 19 minutes and 41.4 seconds. The first woman to cross the finish line was Gwynne Doherty, a 16-year-old from Pleasantville, NY, who coincidentally chose to celebrate her birthday weekend by participating in the race. Doherty completed the 5K in 24 minutes and 12.84 seconds. The second female finisher and the first female Islander was Sarah Fairbairn, a 58-year-old who completed the race with a time of 24 minutes and 40.51 seconds. Ana Fernandez, a 43-year-old from Southampton, claimed the third position among the females, finishing the race in 32 minutes and 3.2 seconds.

The race was marred by concerns of inclement weather, but Dr. Frank Adipietro, the voice of the annual race, accurately predicted that the rain would hold off until the final stretch. Surprisingly, the predicted strong winds arrived much later in the day. Race Director Mary Ellen Adipietro had ensured the presence of tents for the protection of the crowd before the race and set up a post-race celebration as well.

The highly anticipated event will be covered in detail in Thursday’s edition of the Reporter. Stay tuned for an in-depth analysis and highlights from this year’s Shelter Island 5K.

In conclusion, the 24th annual Shelter Island 5K surpassed expectations with the Green brothers’ exceptional performances. Jason’s new course record stands as a testament to the sheer talent displayed on that red-letter day. The event proved to be a memorable celebration of athleticism, triumphing over any reservations about the weather.
