A first-year electrical engineering student at Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was found hanging from her hostel room on Thursday morning. The student, identified as Deepti Mandaloi, had failed in five subjects in her first-semester exam and police believe she took her own life due to depression.

Mandaloi, who was from Gogaon in Khargone district, left a suicide note stating that she found it difficult to pursue an engineering course in English, having studied in Hindi until Class 12. However, the college offers engineering in Hindi, and in the first year, the education medium is mixed (Hindi and English) due to the presence of students from various mediums.

College director Rakesh Saxena told reporters that there was no evidence of ragging and that Mandaloi’s room partner said she had been behaving normally with no sign of depression before she died. Nonetheless, the exact reason for her suicide is still unclear, and further investigation will be carried out.

The tragic incident highlights the pressure that students face in India to perform well academically. It is important for educational institutions and families to recognize the signs of distress and provide the necessary support to students to prevent such devastating outcomes.
