Sex Offender McCurry Released in Abbotsford: Police Issue Public Warning

Abbotsford residents are being alerted by local law enforcement about the release of a convicted sex offender in their city. Hugh Alexander McCurry, 46, who was released in Powell River on Friday, will now be residing in the Abbotsford area. Due to his history of sexual offenses against children, the police issued a public notification on Friday night to ensure community awareness and vigilance.

According to the police notice, McCurry has a criminal record that includes previous convictions for sexual offenses against children in 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2016. Additionally, he has breached probation orders in 2000 and 2001. Law enforcement shared a photo and description of McCurry, stating that he is 5’9 tall, weighs 153 pounds, and has grey hair and hazel eyes.

To protect the community, McCurry is subject to strict conditions and lifetime bans. He is prohibited from entering any public park or swimming area where individuals under the age of 16 are present or might reasonably be expected to be present. Furthermore, he is barred from daycare centers, schools, playgrounds, and community centers. McCurry is also prohibited from seeking or obtaining any employment or volunteer work that involves positions of trust or authority towards individuals under 16. However, exceptions can be made if the work is supervised by a deemed appropriate person, as determined by the court.

As part of his current release conditions, McCurry remains subject to the same two bans mentioned above. Additionally, he is not allowed to have any contact or communication with individuals under the age of 16 unless he obtains written permission from a bail supervisor or engages in incidental contact in a public setting where other adults are present. The police emphasized that if anyone spots McCurry violating any of the listed conditions, they should dial 911 immediately.

Ensuring the safety and security of the Abbotsford community is of utmost importance, and the police are making proactive efforts to notify the public about the presence of a convicted sex offender in their midst. By raising awareness and urging residents to be vigilant, they aim to protect vulnerable individuals and maintain a secure environment.
