A pollution complaint has been filed after shocking images emerged of a sewage pipe discharging salmon farm waste into a river near Scotland’s iconic Loch Fyne. Video footage obtained by campaigners shows large quantities of effluent, including sludge from feed pellets used to feed caged salmon, being released into the Kinglas Water. The river water near the pipe has turned a murky brown color, and the riverbed is covered in brown mush from leftover feed. Campaigner Don Staniford has filed the complaint, prompting an investigation by Scotland’s environment watchdog SEPA. The source of the discharge has been provisionally identified but not disclosed. Cooke Aquaculture, the company that operates the nearby freshwater hatchery, has stated it is compliant with regulations regarding discharges. Environmentalists and campaigners have called for urgent action to address pollution from salmon farms and criticized regulators for turning a blind eye to the issue.
