No respite from biting cold, dense fog to persist over North India for next 5 days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that North India will continue to experience dense fog and cold day to severe cold day conditions over the next 3-5 days. Additionally, the plains of Northwest India will continue to face cold wave to severe cold wave conditions for the next 3 days. Flight operations have been affected, with several delays and cancellations reported due to low visibility caused by the dense fog.

According to the latest bulletin from the IMD, Dense to very dense fog conditions likely to continue to prevail over North India during the next 5 days. Cold day to severe cold day conditions likely to continue to prevail over North India during the next 3 days. The bulletin also stated, Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely to continue over the plains of Northwest India during the next 3 days.

The prevailing weather conditions have resulted in disruptions to travel plans, particularly for those relying on air travel. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport has seen a significant number of delays and affected flight operations due to the low visibility caused by the dense fog. SpiceJet, one of India’s leading airlines, has already posted a notification stating, Due to poor visibility in Dharamshala (DHM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may be affected.

The cold wave conditions, coupled with dense fog, have been affecting various parts of North India for several days. Since December 29, 2023, maximum temperatures have dropped below normal by 5-8 degrees Celsius, leading to an extended period of cold weather. While there was a brief respite on January 7 and 8 due to a passing western disturbance, the cold conditions returned on January 9.

The IMD has forecasted a further drop in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C over many parts of East India in the next 3 days, with no significant change expected thereafter. However, minimal changes in minimum temperatures are expected over the rest of North India during the next 5 days.

As travelers and residents continue to grapple with the freezing temperatures and reduced visibility, it is important to plan accordingly and take precautions to ensure their safety. Monitor weather updates closely, follow guidelines from local authorities, and allow for extra time for travel to account for possible delays or disruptions.

In conclusion, North India is expected to face persistent dense fog and cold wave conditions over the next few days. Flight operations have been severely affected, and travelers are advised to stay updated on the weather situation and make necessary adjustments to their plans. Take necessary precautions and stay safe during this period of biting cold and low visibility.
