Services Australia Stands Ready to Support Communities in Far North Queensland
Services Australia is prepared to provide assistance to communities in Far North Queensland as they face the aftermath of heavy rainfall and flash flooding. The Minister for Government Services, the Hon Bill Shorten MP, assured Australians that the government is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to support those affected during this difficult time.
With the escalating situation, Services Australia is continuously monitoring developments in Far North Queensland and working closely with partner agencies, as well as local and state governments, to provide the necessary support to the impacted communities.
As part of their response, Services Australia has suspended mutual obligation requirements nationally from Monday, 18 December until Monday, 1 January 2024. This pause aims to alleviate some pressure during the Christmas period and allow affected Australians to prioritize their safety. In addition to this, certain Services Australia offices have closed due to significant damage to local infrastructure and roads, prioritizing the wellbeing of staff and customers.
Customers of Services Australia will also notice some changes, as the agency will automatically pay their regular income support payment in select impacted postcodes. This means that affected individuals won’t have to report their income before receiving support from Services Australia.
To stay informed about service center closures and the latest updates, it is advised to regularly visit the Services Australia website at servicesaustralia.gov.au/servicechanges.
While physical offices may be temporarily closed, Australians can still seek assistance with their Centrelink, Medicare, and Child Support matters via online services, the myGov app, or by contacting Services Australia directly.
As the situation continues to evolve, Services Australia will provide further updates in the coming days. Media inquiries can be directed to Antonia Magee at 0409 339 989.
Amid these challenging circumstances, Services Australia remains committed to supporting the affected communities in Far North Queensland, ensuring that individuals and families receive the assistance they need.
