A suspected ‘psycho killer’ has reportedly murdered nine women in five months in India’s Bareilly district who were dressed in sarees or a chunari and is still at large.
The recent murder of a 55-year-old woman, who was strangled to death while wearing a saree, marks the ninth incident in a row in the past five months in the Shishgarh and Shahi Adi areas of Bareilly.
Indian media reports reveal that two special teams have been assembled to crack the cases, with increased surveillance in the affected areas.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Satish Kumar Singh, stated that all the victims were middle-aged women who were strangled to death using a saree or a chunari. Measures are being taken to hold meetings with residents of the villages where these incidents occurred.
Singh announced the formation of two distinct teams to handle the cases. One team will directly investigate the incidents, while the other will gather information from village chiefs and other relevant parties. Police officers will be working undercover in plain clothes.
The most recent victim, Urmila Devi Gangwar, from Jagdishpur village, left her house on Sunday afternoon to feed her animals in a nearby field. When she failed to return, her husband began searching and discovered her broken bangles 400 meters from the village alongside the road. Unfortunately, her body was found later, showing marks of injuries to the back of her head.
The body has been sent for a postmortem examination, and legal proceedings have commenced at the Shishgarh police station.
