In a significant development, Gaurav Tiwari Tony, Head of Hydrogen Division and a prominent serial entrepreneur, has launched the revolutionary Hy-Box Technology. This groundbreaking technology aims to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious green hydrogen mission and transform the energy landscape. With its corporate headquarters in New Delhi, Hy-Box is set to revolutionize the clean and sustainable energy sector.

Gaurav Tiwari Tony, known for his extensive work in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects and the construction of a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU)-based LNG terminal, explained that the Hy-Box Technology relies on a purely thermal heat process. By utilizing a 200-degree hot rock in a closed-loop system, steam is generated and directed to power turbines, resulting in the generation of green power. The technology also incorporates electrolysers to produce green hydrogen. To facilitate the implementation of the technology, Hy-Box is in discussions with a German company for the supply of necessary turbines and electrolysers. Initial projects will focus on 1 MW implementation, with each project expandable to 5 MW.

Gaurav Tiwari Tony shared that once the proof-of-concept projects using Hy-Box technology are successfully implemented, a patent for Thermal Green Hydrogen Production will be filed. It is worth noting that Gaurav already holds three patents in the energy and other fields. He further revealed that discussions are underway with various companies for the distribution and offtake of green hydrogen on a city basis. Additionally, BoxLNG, the parent company of Hy-Box, has plans to implement three Compressed Biogas (CBG) projects worth 300 crores by 2024.

Highlighting the potential of the Hy-Box Technology, Gaurav emphasized that innovative technologies are essential to meet India’s requirement of five million tonnes of hydrogen. Recognizing India’s position as the second-largest importer of LNG in the world, Gaurav proposed adding 3-9 percent hydrogen to Re-gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) to meet the growing demand. Having spent 20 years in the USA before returning to India to contribute to the green energy sector, Gaurav expressed satisfaction with the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s approval by the Union Cabinet in January 2023. The mission aims to create a capacity of 5 metric million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) by 2030 with an outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores.

Gaurav Tiwari Tony also emphasized that Hy-Box Technology aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Modi’s carbon reduction model of 2 kilograms of carbon for every kilogram of hydrogen. As the technology produces 100 percent green hydrogen with zero carbon emissions, it eliminates the need for carbon production.

In response to questions regarding the feasibility of producing green hydrogen using existing power generation systems, such as solar, Gaurav Tiwari Tony highlighted the unique advantages of Hy-Box Technology. The 200-degree hot rock closed-loop thermal system enables the technology to be implemented across the country, ensuring continuous 24-hour base load green power generation and green hydrogen production.

Gaurav Tiwari Tony expressed his excitement about the progress of the green hydrogen sector, particularly considering Reliance Industries’ plan to create or enable capacity to generate 100 gigawatts of electricity from renewable sources by 2030, which can be converted into carbon-free green hydrogen. Responding to a news report quoting Reliance Industries’ statement of producing Green Hydrogen at $1 per kilogram, Gaurav deemed a project cost of $2 per kilogram in the long term and $3 per kilogram as more realistic.

By introducing the state-of-the-art Hy-Box Technology, Gaurav Tiwari Tony and his team are set to play a pivotal role in supporting Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a greener and more sustainable India. The innovative and clean energy solution offered by Hy-Box has the potential to revolutionize the energy sector and drive the widespread adoption of green hydrogen as a viable alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
