The Sensex, the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange, climbed 418 points to a six-month high while the Nifty closed above the 17,700 mark, thanks to positive domestic macroeconomic data and gains in global markets. Positive buying in index majors Reliance Industries and ITC, also fueled the optimism in equities. This is the second consecutive session where the 30-share BSE Sensex has seen a jump of 0.67% or 418.45 points and settled at 63,143.16, the highest since December 1, when the barometer closed at an all-time high.
Further, the NSE Nifty climbed 114.65 points, or 0.62%, to close at 18,716.15. Retail inflation also declined by 4.25% to a 25-month low in May, due to easing prices of food and fuel items, and industrial production growth rose to 4.2% in April from a low of 1.7% in March, mainly due to good performance by the manufacturing and mining sectors.
The BSE midcap gauge soared 1.17% while the smallcap index climbed 0.82%. Among the indices, realty rallied 2.94%, consumer durables zoomed 1.80%, and telecommunication surged 1.69%. The only laggard was Services, which dipped into the red. As many as 2,117 stocks advanced, while 1,469 declined and 136 remained unchanged on the BSE.
