A senior official in Maharashtra has been arrested for corruption following an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Anil Ganpatrao Ramond, the Additional Divisional Commissioner in Pune, was taken into custody after allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of INR 8 lakh ($10,800) from a representative of farmers to assist with land acquisition matters. The CBI conducted searches at three locations, recovering a total of INR 6 crore in cash, property-related documents, investment and bank account details and other incriminating evidence. Ramond is accused of holding up farmers’ compensation cases, with his accuser alleging that he demanded an undue advantage of 10 per cent of the increased compensation amount as a bribe. The accused settled for INR 8 lakh, leading the CBI to lay a trap and catch him in the act. Ramond will appear before the court at Shivajinagar, Pune, on 12 June.
