A self-driving car operating as a ride-share service was surrounded and destroyed by a mob during Lunar New Year celebrations in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The incident took place on February 10, with videos showing individuals vandalizing the vehicle and setting it on fire. Hundreds of onlookers watched as the car was graffitied and its windows were smashed with a skateboard. Although no injuries were reported, the vehicle was engulfed in flames after a firework was set off inside it. The San Francisco Police Department responded to the scene, and investigations are currently underway. The vehicle was part of Waymo’s robo-taxi service, a product of Alphabet, and was equipped with advanced sensors and cameras. City officials estimate that approximately 500,000 people participated in the Lunar New Year parade and festivities before the incident occurred. Waymo has not yet commented on the incident.
