Authorities Raise Security Alert Following Impending Threat to Abuja-Kaduna Train Service
Intelligence reports have revealed an imminent danger to the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) in Nigeria, as a coalition of banditry syndicate plans to attack the route. The secret police, in a security memo addressed to the NRC Managing Director, has called for urgent and improved security measures to prevent any potential harm to passengers and disruption of the train service.
The threat involves the intention to kidnap passengers on board the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service and demand ransom. This alarming development requires immediate action to ensure the safety of commuters and to uphold the integrity of the train service. In light of these circumstances, the secret police is urging the implementation of several counter security measures.
Firstly, air surveillance patrols are advised to monitor and respond swiftly to any suspicious activity along the AKTS corridor. Additionally, enhancing surveillance along the rail track is crucial to prevent any attempts to disrupt the train service. The secret police also stressed the necessity of military and police checkpoints/patrols to be intensified, acting as a deterrent to potential criminals.
To further safeguard the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service, the secret police recommends a security raid operation around specific areas including Byazhin, Jibi, and the Ija forest. These locations have been identified as possible hideouts or points of vulnerability for the bandits. Moreover, the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (NPMF) operatives are advised to be equipped with walkie talkies to ensure effective communication and coordination during escort duties on the train. Similarly, deploying additional Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel with walkie talkies for escort duty is suggested to amplify security measures.
It is vital to highlight the urgency for enhanced security given the historical context. On March 28, 2022, bandits ambushed a Kaduna-bound train, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least seven individuals. Furthermore, over a hundred passengers were abducted and their release was only secured after their families paid substantial ransoms.
The recent security alert emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to thwart potential attacks and to safeguard the lives and well-being of those using the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service. The authorities have called upon the relevant security agencies to implement the recommended counter security measures promptly.
Efforts are underway to secure the AKTS corridor, ensuring the continuation of seamless train transportation for the people of Nigeria. By employing the proposed security strategies, authorities aim to deter criminal elements that pose a threat to the safety of commuters. The successful implementation of these measures will restore confidence in the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service, creating a secure environment for travelers.
Authorities are determined to collaborate closely with security agencies to maintain a robust security presence and swiftly respond to any potential threats or emergencies. The welfare and security of the public remain the top priority, and stringent efforts are being made to guarantee a safe and uninterrupted travel experience for all passengers of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service.
