FREMONT, CA, Jan 17, 2024 — SeagateTechnology Holdings plc (NASDAQ: STX) has launched a groundbreaking hard drive platform that signifies a significant milestone in the storage industry. The Mozaic 3+™ platform incorporates Seagate’s pioneering implementation of Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology, enabling unparalleled areal densities of 3 TB+ per platter. This launch also paves the way for achieving even higher capacities of 4 TB+ and 5 TB+ per platter in the coming years.

With the power of the Mozaic 3+ platform, Seagate’s flagship Exos product family now offers industry-leading capacity points of 30 TB and beyond. These products are already shipping in volume this quarter to hyperscale cloud customers.

Seagate’s breakthrough areal density innovation addresses common pain points in the industry. The Mozaic 3+ platform allows customers to store more data in the same floor space as before. By upgrading from a 16 TB conventional perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) drive, data centers can effectively double their capacity in the same footprint by switching to an Exos 30 TB Mozaic 3+ drive.

What sets the Mozaic 3+ platform apart is its ability to dramatically increase capacity while using similar material components as PMR hard drives. This offers data centers the opportunity to significantly reduce storage acquisition and operational costs, including a 40% improvement in per terabyte power consumption. Furthermore, the platform aids in achieving sustainability goals, with a 55% reduction in embodied carbon per terabyte compared to traditional 16 TB PMR drives.

This groundbreaking technology from Seagate has garnered strong demand from data center customers, who are expected to complete qualification of Mozaic 3+ and move into volume ramping by the end of this quarter. The confidence in this technology is evidenced by a leading cloud service provider’s focus on ramping up Seagate-provided drives to Mozaic 3+.

Dave Mosley, Seagate’s CEO, emphasized the significance of the company’s areal density capability, saying, Seagate is the world’s only hard drive manufacturer with the areal density capability to get to 3 TB per platter and with 5 TB on the horizon. He further explained that as AI use cases rely heavily on raw data sets, the importance of areal density has never been greater.

The Mozaic 3+ platform represents more than just HAMR technology, added Mosley. It comprises several industry-first innovations that we’ve integrated to help us scale areal density.

John Rydning, Research Vice President IDC Global DataSphere, recognized the economic and efficient nature of Seagate’s areal density improvements, stating, Hard drive areal density improvements are critical for economically and efficiently expanding the installed base of hard drive-based mass storage, especially in data centers. He praised Seagate’s timing and expressed confidence that the company will continue delivering higher capacity hard drive products for years to come.

Seagate’s Mozaic 3+ storage technology will also have a wide range of applications beyond data centers, including enterprise, edge, NAS, and video and imaging markets.

Seagate Technology has cemented its position as the leader in sustainable mass-capacity data storage solutions. With over four billion terabytes of data capacity shipped, Seagate offers a comprehensive portfolio of storage devices, systems, and services, supporting industries from edge to cloud.
