In a thrilling girls’ tennis showdown, Scranton Prep showcased their dominance against Abington Heights in an intense match. The highly anticipated event drew a large crowd of teammates, family, and friends who gathered outside the fence of the first court at Abington Heights Middle School.

Alyssa Wigley, Scranton Prep’s top singles player and the reigning Times-Tribune Player of the Year, took center stage against Abington Heights’ Susan Arp. These two players, both undefeated, captivated the audience with their remarkable skills, resulting in a back-and-forth battle that kept everyone on their toes.

The bleachers were packed, and the atmosphere was electric as the players showcased their athleticism and determination. With each impressive shot and return, applause erupted from the spectators in admiration of the players’ skill levels.

Ultimately, it was Wigley who emerged victorious, securing her 10th win without a loss by defeating Arp 6-2, 6-3. Reflecting on her match, Wigley acknowledged the challenge of playing on Abington Heights’ home courts, with the opposing team enjoying the advantage of fervent fans. Nevertheless, she expressed her pride in her team’s ability to overcome nerves and secure a resounding victory.

The dominance of Scranton Prep extended beyond singles matches. Lily Lengyel, with her powerful forehand and well-executed drop shots, defeated Leelah Farrell 6-2, 6-1, maintaining her flawless singles record of 10-0 for the season. Additionally, sophomore Emma Cuck secured her second career victory by overcoming Sona Hanumali in a hard-fought match that ended 6-4, 6-0.

Scranton Prep continued their winning streak in doubles as well. Ella Cohen and Grace Devine teamed up to defeat Mary Booth and Amishi Amit 6-0, 6-0, while Hannah LaCoe and Nicole Kranovich overcame Sammy Rosenstein and Bernie Mullen with a score of 6-1, 6-1.

With this triumph over Abington Heights, Scranton Prep maintained their undefeated streak, solidifying their position as frontrunners for a second consecutive league championship. Their 10-0 record places them confidently in the driver’s seat for further success.

While Scranton Prep celebrated their victory, other matches unfolded across the region. Erika Badner, Sarah Niemiec, and Alaina Burke led the Lady Buckhorns to a 5-0 win over Scranton at Wallenpaupack, while Zarina Mustafina’s victory at No. 3 singles propelled West Scranton to a 3-2 win over Montrose. Holy Cross also emerged triumphant with a 4-1 win over Mid Valley at the University of Scranton, and Riverside claimed a 3-2 victory over Honesdale at McDade Park.

In another match, Dunmore displayed their strengths with a resounding 5-0 win over Western Wayne, courtesy of Ava Ferraro, Krithika Kishnon, and Sasha Novak.

Overall, it was a day filled with competitive tennis and impressive performances.
