Schools in Goa are set to reopen from June 5 for the academic year 2023-24, with the exception of lower kindergarten classes, which will open on July 3. According to department of education sources, school management has already prepared for the reopening. However, self-help groups who supply cooked food to students as part of the mid-day meal scheme have demanded payment of outstanding bills before proceeding, causing concern over potential food shortages. While the government has pledged to pay the bills, it is considering providing dry rations to pupils if the groups refuse to deliver meals. The department of education is also evaluating a system of direct money transfer to pupils’ accounts to fund the purchase of raincoats, rather than providing them directly.
