School Children’s Books Sold to a Scrap Dealer in Purnea

On Monday, police in Purnea, Bihar conducted a raid in a scrap dealer’s warehouse and recovered a huge number of books that were meant to be distributed to government schools in Purnea district. The books were surrounded in cotton bags and were all new and required for the current academic session of the schools. Police arrested two persons in connection with the case identified as Mohammad Shakeel and Mohammad Asfaq, the latter being a scrap dealer. In addition to the books, they also recovered 425 school dairies.

Mohammad Shakeel had brought the books to Mohammad Asfaq and he bought the books for Rs 7,000 without knowing how he obtained them. Sangeeta Kumari, the block education officer of Purnea, spoke against this incident and said they took legal action as soon as the matter came to their knowledge.

This incident highlights the need to ensure there are proper systems in place to avoid such cases of mismanagement. Steps should be taken to ensure the books reach the students, who are the intended beneficiaries. Moreover, it is also essential to conduct strict background checks for personnel handling the distribution of such items, as well as implementing effective surveillance procedures while making sure the books do not end up in scrap dealers’ hands.
