Title: Scholarship Softball Tournament Honors Athlete Slain by Domestic Violence

Lynn, Massachusetts – In a heartwarming tribute to honor a talented athlete lost to domestic violence, the annual Scholarship Softball Tournament took place this weekend. The event, organized by Joseph Masucci in memory of his sister Vanessa, aimed to raise funds for a scholarship while keeping her memory alive.

Vanessa Masucci, a beloved member of the Lynn community, had a deep passion for softball from a young age. Her brother Joseph shared, She loved softball…so we figured it would be a good way to raise money for a scholarship and keep her name around, and keep people talking about her and sharing stories.

The tournament, now in its third year, raises funds for a $2,500 scholarship awarded to a graduate of a high school in Lynn. This year’s recipient, Jarielis Perez, was a standout softball and basketball player at Lynn English High School. The scholarship aims to support and uplift talented young athletes like Vanessa.

Vanessa’s brother reminisced about her skill and competitive spirit on the field. She played for Lynn’s Babe Ruth all-star team and was a first baseman and designated hitter for four years at St. Mary’s High School. Joseph fondly remembered Vanessa’s determination and love for the sport, stating, She was a very good athlete…very competitive. She never lost her love for the sport.

Tragically, Vanessa’s life was cut short by an act of domestic violence. Her husband, who was convicted and is now serving a life sentence, committed the heinous crime at their home in Revere. The Scholarship Softball Tournament provides a space for family and friends to celebrate Vanessa’s life as a strong athlete who always wore a smile and had a great sense of humor.

Sara McCabe, Vanessa’s best friend since high school, reflected on their time together on the St. Mary’s softball team. Vanessa was not only a great teammate but also a fun and silly person who never hesitated to laugh at herself. Another close friend, Jessica Walsh, described Vanessa as kind, protective, intelligent, and funny, emphasizing the impact she had on those around her.

The tournament featured eight co-ed teams, each with a maximum of 15 players. A unique aspect of the tournament requires at least four female players to be on the field at all times, promoting inclusivity and showcasing the talent of female athletes. The event included food and raffle prizes to raise additional funds for the scholarship.

Highlighting the importance of family, Vanessa’s six-year-old daughter, Adrianna, had the honor of throwing out the first pitch. The day served as an opportunity for those left behind to come together and reminisce about the remarkable moments they shared with Vanessa.

The Scholarship Softball Tournament not only memorializes a beloved athlete but also serves as a reminder of the urgent need to address domestic violence. By celebrating Vanessa’s athletic achievements and raising funds for aspiring young athletes, the community’s collective effort ensures that her legacy lives on, inspiring positive change while promoting camaraderie and support.

In memory of Vanessa Masucci and countless other victims of domestic violence, communities continue to unite, raising awareness and working towards a world free from such tragedy.
