Swedish bunker firm ScanOcean has partnered with Finland’s Neste to introduce a groundbreaking bio-based marine gasoil (MGO) that offers a significant reduction in emissions. The co-processed MGO, which contains a bio-based feedstock and conventional MGO, has been developed with the objective of minimizing environmental impact. By adding renewable raw materials, such as used cooking oil, during the refining process, ScanOcean and Neste have achieved a product that meets ISO 8217 specifications and is ISCC Plus certified.

According to ScanOcean, this innovative fuel can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional MGO. The production process utilizes mass-balance to ensure similar energy characteristics to MGO, while significantly reducing its environmental footprint. With contracts already in place for regular supply of the new fuel, ScanOcean aims to meet the growing demands of environmentally-conscious shipowners.

The launch of this bio-based MGO comes as the shipping industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its GHG emissions. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) recently adopted a revised GHG emissions strategy, bringing the reduction of emissions to the forefront of the industry’s agenda. As a result, shipowners are actively seeking cleaner and more sustainable fuel alternatives.

ScanOcean’s new Neste MGO will be available as a bunker fuel on the Swedish east coast, starting immediately. The fuel will also be accessible at the Sodertalje ex-pipe facility. While the price of the bio-based MGO is indicated at $1,700 per ton, it offers a significant advantage in terms of reduced emissions when compared to traditional MGO.

The introduction of this innovative fuel is a commendable step toward a more sustainable maritime industry. By offering a bio-based alternative that meets industry specifications and reduces GHG emissions, ScanOcean and Neste are providing shipowners with an environmentally-friendly solution. The bio-based MGO is expected to gain traction among vessel operators seeking to proactively address their carbon footprint.

It is important to note the efforts made by ScanOcean and Neste to develop this eco-friendly fuel. By collaborating and utilizing renewable raw materials, they are contributing to a more sustainable future for the shipping industry. As the global focus on environmental protection intensifies, similar initiatives are likely to emerge, driving further innovation and progress in the maritime sector.

In conclusion, the launch of the bio-based MGO by ScanOcean and Neste represents a significant milestone in the quest for cleaner and greener shipping fuels. With its ability to reduce GHG emissions by up to 80%, this novel solution addresses the urgent need for more sustainable alternatives. As the industry embraces environmental consciousness, the demand for such bio-based fuels is expected to grow, leading to a more eco-friendly and responsible shipping industry.
