The Supreme Court has requested a report from its registry regarding the urgent listing of a plea challenging the Reserve Bank of India’s decision to permit citizens to exchange Rs 2,000 notes without the need for a requisition slip or ID proof. The decision to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes from circulation was part of a currency management exercise and citizens are being given until the end of September to exchange them with other denominations. However, advocate Ashwini Upadhyay approached the court challenging the RBI’s decision, stating that it contravenes the Prevention of Corruption Act, Benami Transactions Act, Money Laundering Act, Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, CVC Act, Fugitive Economic Offenders Act and the Black Money Act. The case was dismissed by the high court, which stated that the government’s decision should not be subject to judicial review.
