The Supreme Court in New Delhi refused to hear an urgent plea seeking Army protection for the Kuki tribals in Manipur amid ethnic violence in the state. The Manipur Tribal Forum, an NGO, has alleged that the central government and the Manipur chief minister have embarked on a communal agenda aimed at ethnic cleansing of Kuki tribals in the state. The court had a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and M M Sundresh, who stated that the issue is purely a law and order issue. More than 100 people have lost their lives in the violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. The matter was posted for hearing on July 3.
