The holy month of Sawan (Shravan) has begun with great fervor as devotees in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj were seen offering prayers at the Sangam after taking a holy bath. Prayagraj holds immense significance for Hindus as the water from the banks of the River Ganga is considered sacred due to Lord Brahma’s 10 Ahwamedh Yagya performed there.

The devotees were filled with enthusiasm as they took a dip in the holy river and then proceeded to visit various temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Kanwariyas, who participate in the Kanwar Yatra, also collect water from the Dashashwameca Ghat and carry it to Lord Shiva’s temples. Some devotees choose to visit other revered places like Banaras and Vaidhnath.

The first day of Sawan saw devotees thronging Lord Shiva’s temples across the state, with many also offering prayers at the Nageshwar Nath Temple in Ayodhya. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself visited the Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur to seek blessings.

Sawan, also known as Shravan, is considered one of the holiest months of the year in the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, the Shravan period has been extended to two months instead of the usual one month. The first fasting Monday of the period falls on July 10, while the last Monday fast will be observed on August 28.

The addition of an extra month, known as Malmas or Adhikmas, occurs every three years when the Sun transitions from one zodiac sign to another. This year, Malmas will start on July 18, 2023, and end on August 16, 2023.

The Kanwar Yatra, an integral part of Sawan, involves devotees collecting water from sacred rivers and carrying it in Kanwars (little mud pots) while dressed in saffron-colored clothes. They then embark on a pilgrimage to temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, such as Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri, and Sultanganj, to worship with the holy water from the River Ganga.

It is important for devotees to abide by the COVID-19 protocols and ensure their safety and the safety of others during their temple visits and Yatra. The ongoing pandemic calls for caution and adherence to guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.

As devotees immerse themselves in the observances of Sawan, it is a time of deep spiritual connection and devotion. The rituals, prayers, and acts of worship not only strengthen their faith but also provide solace and hope during challenging times.

As Sawan continues until August 31, devotees will continue to visit temples, offer prayers, and seek blessings from Lord Shiva. This auspicious month offers an opportunity for devotees to deepen their connection with the divine and experience the power of faith and devotion. Let us all embrace this period with reverence and joy, keeping the spirit of Sawan alive in our hearts.
