Save NSW’s Threatened Sea Turtles: Report Nest Activities to NSW TurtleWatch
As the temperatures rise, more and more people are flocking to the beautiful beaches of New South Wales (NSW). However, beachgoers must be aware that they might not be the only ones seeking solace in the sand. Nesting sea turtles, including the green and loggerhead turtles, are sharing these shores and they are in desperate need of our protection.
These magnificent creatures are listed as threatened species and are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Therefore, it is crucial that we do everything in our power to safeguard their nests and ensure the survival of each and every one of them.
Merryn Dunleavy, NSW TurtleWatch’s Project Officer, emphasized the importance of beach enthusiasts becoming the eyes and ears for these gentle giants. If you happen to spot sea turtle tracks or, even more exciting, discover a nest, your help is needed. Capture as many photos as possible and immediately report your findings to NSW TurtleWatch at 0447 877 149 or the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) at 1300 072 757.
It is vital that these nests are not disturbed by people or dogs, and early detection plays a crucial role in protecting these precious nests and the future generation of sea turtles nestled within.
The recently concluded 2022-23 nesting season revealed an interesting trend with three sea turtle nests being laid outside the usual nesting range. Nests were recorded at Hawks Nest, Bateau Bay, and Wollongong, areas where successful nesting activities are not typically observed. This highlights the need for more volunteer citizen scientists to monitor and report any turtle nest activities along the extensive coastline.
Reporting a turtle nest can make all the difference between life and death for sea turtle eggs. These nests face various threats, including predation, high tides, and erosion. By notifying the authorities promptly, action can be taken to physically protect and monitor the nests until they hatch.
Anyone can contribute to the conservation efforts and become a citizen scientist, protecting the sea turtles and their hatchlings. All it takes is the willingness to lend a helping hand.
