Sarawak, a state in Malaysia, is striving to embrace digitalization, but it requires skilled data analysts and cybersecurity experts to make this transformation possible. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg emphasized the importance of equipping locals with knowledge and skills related to data analysis, referring to data as the new oil of the state. Speaking at the seventh convocation of Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS), he urged the people to develop expertise in reading, coding, and decoding data.

We have the data, but we need to know how to translate it through the encoding and decoding process, he stated. Data analysts are crucial in understanding and making sense of the vast amounts of available data. However, Abang Johari also emphasized the need to protect this valuable resource. Therefore, the state requires cybersecurity analysts to safeguard the data that serves as the foundation for progress.

In addition to the need for data and cybersecurity experts, the Premier highlighted Sarawak’s urgent demand for professionals in robotics, specifically in the agricultural sector and chip design. By utilizing robots and chip technology, the state could reduce its reliance on manual labor and improve efficiency in various sectors.

Abang Johari’s emphasis on digitalization and the development of key skills correlates with Sarawak’s ambition to embrace technological advancements. As the world becomes increasingly digital, it is crucial for individuals to acquire expertise in data analysis and cybersecurity. These fields play a vital role in harnessing the potential of data while ensuring its protection against cyber threats.

Furthermore, the Premier encouraged UTS graduates to venture into robotics, an area where Sarawak currently lacks sufficient expertise. By focusing on robotics, particularly in the agricultural sector, the state can address challenges related to labor shortages and improve agricultural practices. Moreover, chip design expertise is crucial in the production and implementation of advanced robotic systems.

Sarawak’s pursuit of digitalization is driven by the understanding that technology can bring about significant advancements in various industries. By fostering a workforce equipped with the necessary skills, the state aims to unlock the potential of data, protect valuable information, and leverage robotics to enhance productivity and efficiency.

As Sarawak embarks on its digital transformation journey, the need for skilled data analysts, cybersecurity experts, and robotics professionals becomes increasingly apparent. The Premier’s call to equip locals with these skills reflects the state’s determination to stay at the forefront of technological advancements. By embracing digitalization and nurturing a skilled workforce, Sarawak is positioning itself for a prosperous future in the digital age.
