Dec. 2 — After years of advocating for soccer in Santa Fe, Scott Hussion is making a plea for more fields. As the executive director of the Northern Soccer Club youth league, Hussion has witnessed the growing passion for the sport among children in the region. However, the current field situation in the city falls short of meeting the demand. With only five soccer fields available, none specifically designated for kids, leagues are left vying for space with other sports. Hussion’s recent Mucho Soccer campaign aims to push for additional fields and has gained support with an online petition garnering 300 signatures in just one week. Hussion plans to lobby state lawmakers and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham for funding to establish a regional soccer complex. Recognizing the issue, the City Council also prioritized funding for soccer venue expansion in its capital outlay request for the 2024 legislative session, including $12 million for the MRC Soccer Valley expansion. Additionally, $1.5 million in unanticipated gross receipts tax revenue will be allocated to soccer upgrades, with $1 million going toward improvements at the Salvador Perez soccer field. The council unanimously approved an ordinance introduced by Councilor Jamie Cassutt to remove priority use designations for certain sports fields, allowing for greater flexibility to accommodate the increased demand for youth soccer. The proposed expansion is seen as a benefit to the community, with hopes of attracting tournaments and boosting revenue for the city. Furthermore, an anonymous donor has promised to match the city’s funds if they can raise $3 million for the Soccer Valley expansion. Cassutt is optimistic that the new ordinance and the potential for matched funding will garner more support and capital funding from the Legislature. As interest in soccer continues to grow and expand, Santa Fe is addressing the need for improved sports facilities to better serve its community, particularly the youth who are eager to engage in healthy and organized activities.
