San Pedro Town in Belize has been hit by a surge in flu-like infections, with the local polyclinic reporting an increase in cases. The rise in respiratory illnesses has raised concerns about the possible presence of Covid-19 variants in the area. Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II has been working tirelessly to treat the influx of flu patients, urging residents to wear face masks in enclosed spaces and seek medical attention if they feel unwell.

According to recent data from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, there has been a significant difference in the number of infections among different age groups in San Pedro. In October of last year, there were 77 cases of respiratory illnesses in children under the age of five. This year, the number has jumped to 265. Similarly, the number of flu-like infections in individuals aged five and above has skyrocketed from 127 cases last year to 532 cases this year.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has confirmed that most of these cases are linked to the Covid-19 virus, including its variants. Between 2022 and 2023, Belize has been dealing with the Omicron variant and its BA.5 sub-variant, which have caused concerns worldwide. It is worth noting that Belize has not yet acquired the updated Covid-19 vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for better protection against these new variants.

To combat the spread of respiratory illnesses, vaccines against the common flu and Covid-19 are available at the San Pedro Polyclinic. The clinic also offers Covid testing for those who suspect they may have been infected. Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, over 692,000 tests have been conducted in Belize, identifying more than 71,000 cases. Unfortunately, the disease has claimed the lives of 743 individuals, with male patients being primarily affected.

While many Belizeans have already been vaccinated, authorities are urging caution in light of the recent wave of flu infections. The public is advised to follow established public health measures such as practicing good hand hygiene, maintaining social distancing, and wearing face masks in crowded places, particularly indoors. These measures have proven effective in preventing the spread of respiratory viruses.

As San Pedro Town deals with this surge in flu-like infections, there is a need for increased vigilance and adherence to safety protocols. With the possibility of Covid-19 variants circulating in the area, it is crucial to prioritize the health and well-being of the community. The Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to monitor the situation closely and is taking steps to ensure the availability of updated vaccines in the future.
