One of the notable additions to the story is the mystical uncle of the main character Clara, who goes by the name of Nikola Tesla. Tesla brings the gift of electricity to Clara’s home and even demonstrates some of his inventions on stage, including setting off a Tesla coil. These creative elements not only pay homage to San Jose’s rich history but also add an exciting and educational dimension to the performance.
The San Jose Nutcracker also incorporates other local landmarks and symbols into its production. Instead of cherry blossoms, apricot blossoms make an appearance, highlighting the agricultural heritage of the region. Additionally, a Gilroy garlic harvester takes the stage, further embracing the city’s diverse cultural landscape.
Behind the scenes, the New Ballet cast and crew have been tirelessly preparing for the production since September. The costume director played a crucial role in creating and tailoring over 100 outfits, ensuring that each dancer shines in their role.
