The San Francisco 49ers have reached a historic agreement with defensive end Nick Bosa, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. According to sources, the five-year extension is worth $170 million, with $122.5 million guaranteed. This deal surpasses the previous records set by Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald and Bosa’s own brother, Joey.

The timing of the agreement is worth noting, as it comes just before the regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10. This means that Bosa could be available to play in that game, providing a major boost for the 49ers’ defense.

While it did take 43 days into training camp for the two parties to strike a deal, it was always expected that the 49ers would re-sign their star defensive end. This follows their pattern of extending key players before or early in training camp, as they have done with George Kittle, Fred Warner, and Deebo Samuel in recent years.

Coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were steadfast in their commitment to keeping Bosa on the team and never entertained the idea of trading him. Bosa, on his part, remained patient and expressed confidence that he would eventually receive the contract he deserved.

Bosa’s new deal is well-deserved, considering his outstanding performance in the 2022 season. He earned his first All-Pro selection and a third Pro Bowl berth while leading the league with 18.5 sacks. Additionally, he recorded 51 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 58 quarterback pressures, placing him among the best defensive players in the NFL.

This achievement is all the more impressive considering Bosa suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the 2020 season. However, he has bounced back and registered a combined 34 sacks over the past two seasons.

The significance of this contract extends beyond Bosa’s personal success as it also gives him bragging rights over his brother Joey. Nick’s deal surpasses Joey’s five-year, $135 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.

With this agreement in place, the San Francisco 49ers have secured the services of the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the foreseeable future. Bosa’s presence on the team will undoubtedly strengthen their defense as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
