Rugby league has debuted its tackle-height trial at Bradford’s Odsal Stadium amid mixed reactions. The aim is to protect players better but in the opening round, there were fewer than 100 people in attendance when the Bradford and Leeds academy teams competed. The trial is a six-week experiment that is being tested during four rounds of this season’s academy fixtures. Only tackles below the armpits are legal during the testing period, which targeted reducing an average of five concussions per 10 matches. The first game saw 57 penalties issued, 49 of which were for high tackles, and no concussions. The trial data will be evaluated and a decision made on whether to progress.
