Rookie Defensive Tackle Calijah Kancey Expected to Boost Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Pass Rush on Sunday

TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense is set to receive a much-needed boost on Sunday with the expected return of rookie defensive tackle Calijah Kancey. Kancey’s comeback has generated excitement among his teammates, particularly pass rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who is eager to witness the chaos that Kancey will create on the field.

Kancey’s rookie season was cut short after just 11 snaps in the season opener due to a calf injury sustained during training camp. However, in those limited plays, Kancey showcased his potential with a quarterback knockdown and a pressure, leaving the Bucs hopeful about what he can bring to the table.

Following his recovery and full participation in practice this week, Kancey is poised to make his return against the Detroit Lions. The 6-foot-1, 281-pound interior lineman offers a different dynamic alongside standout nose tackle Vita Vea, thanks to his smaller stature and quicker agility.

Previously, the Bucs had relied on veteran Mike Greene to fill Kancey’s role, but his performance has been lackluster, with just three tackles in four games. Kancey’s return will provide a much-needed additional pass rushing option, as he possesses the quickness and savvy to disrupt opposing offenses.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles recognizes the value Kancey brings, highlighting his potential as a pass rusher and the positive impact he can have on the team’s defense. With Kancey’s skill set and athleticism, the Bucs hope he can contribute to their success on the field.

Kancey himself is eager to get back out there and make plays, having experienced the frustration of being sidelined. He is grateful for the opportunity to recover and is committed to making the most of his chance to contribute to the team.

As the Bucs prepare to face off against the explosive Lions offense, co-defensive coordinator Larry Foote shares his anticipation of having Kancey in the lineup. Foote believes in Kancey’s skill set and the potential he possesses, highlighting the reason the Bucs drafted him.

During his college career at Pittsburgh, Kancey demonstrated his abilities with 14.5 sacks and 27.5 tackles for loss in his final two seasons. The Bucs have faith that he can continue to excel as a professional and elevate the team’s performance.

Kancey’s return is seen as a significant boost for the Bucs’ defense, adding to the firepower already displayed by the team. With his energy and playmaking ability, Kancey aims to make a valuable contribution to the Bucs’ pursuit of success.
