Rob Yates’ brilliant double century has put Warwickshire in a dominant position against Kent in their LV= Insurance County Championship game at Canterbury. After two days of play, Warwickshire declared their first innings at an impressive 549 for seven, giving them a commanding lead of 378 runs. Kent finished the day at 55 for one, still trailing by 323 runs.
Yates played a magnificent innings, scoring an unbeaten 228 runs from 421 balls. His knock included 23 fours and a six, and he batted for an astounding nine hours. Yates’ innings was complemented by a superb knock from Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, who made 81 in his first championship appearance in four years. Henry Brookes remained not out on 52 as Warwickshire dominated proceedings.
In Kent’s second innings, Chris Rushworth struck early to dismiss Tawanda Muyeye. However, Ben Compton and Joe Denly managed to survive till stumps, with Kent still facing a significant deficit.
Yates expressed his delight after his monumental innings. He described it as a special day and commended the slow pitch for helping him settle into his innings. Meanwhile, bad weather played spoilsport in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy fixture between Central Sparks and Western Storm at Moseley CC. Despite the ground recovering from four inches of rain, heavy downpours led to standing water on sections of the outfield, forcing the match to be abandoned. This was a disappointment for both teams, as Sparks were looking to build on their strong start to the resumption of the tournament, while Storm needed points to climb up the table. It was also a frustrating experience for Moseley CC, who were hosting their maiden Sparks first-team game.
