Risks to Afghan Pregnant Women: High Maternal Mortality & Mental Health Crisis

The situation concerning pregnant women in Afghanistan is a cause for concern, as they face various challenges that put their lives at risk. Factors such as economic difficulties, inadequate nutrition, limited access to healthcare, and increased pressures have resulted in significant risks for Afghan pregnant women, according to a report by Khaama Press, an Afghan digital news agency.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted Afghanistan as having the highest maternal mortality rate in Asia. Shockingly, many of these deaths are entirely preventable, emphasizing the urgent need for better access to healthcare centers for women in the country. The lack of access to comprehensive healthcare has contributed to the alarming maternal mortality rate in Afghanistan.

Experts in obstetrics and gynecology have pointed out that various factors, including rising poverty and limited healthcare access, have a detrimental impact on the well-being of both mothers and children. They specifically highlight the psychological aspect of this issue, stressing the importance of comprehensive care during pregnancy. Creating a living environment that offers psychological security, free from any elements that could disturb the mental well-being of expectant mothers, is crucial.

Dr. Saeeda Sediqi, a gynecologist and obstetrician based in a private hospital in Kabul, underlines the significance of maternal mental well-being during pregnancy. She emphasizes that pregnant women experiencing family violence are at risk of premature birth. Deliveries that occur in households with violence often result in complications such as bleeding and inadequate infant care.

Postpartum psychosis is a prevalent mental health issue among pregnant women, according to Dr. Sediqi. Women suffering from this condition struggle with their interactive and social abilities, exhibiting involuntary behaviors like uncontrollable laughter and crying. Understanding and addressing this condition is crucial in effectively supporting mothers during and after pregnancy.

Dr. Sediqi also mentions the dire effects of postpartum psychosis on some mothers worldwide, leading some to take their own lives. Additionally, a rarer yet more dangerous condition known as Baby blue occasionally affects pregnant mothers, posing a risk to their newborns, although such cases are extremely uncommon.

The plight of Afghan pregnant women highlights the urgent need for comprehensive healthcare services and support systems to ensure their safety and well-being. Efforts must be made to address the economic challenges and limited access to nutrition and healthcare that contribute to the risks faced by these women. By prioritizing the mental health of expectant mothers, providing them with a secure and supportive environment, and raising awareness about these critical issues, steps can be taken to improve the overall maternal health situation in Afghanistan.
