Rising ALS Cases Among U.S. Veterans: Uncovering the Devastating Reality

Approximately 6,000 Americans are diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) each year, a debilitating disease that disproportionately affects white males and a significant number of veterans. These veterans, who have selflessly served their country, are now facing a devastating reality as they grapple with ALS.

Debbie Mares, a resident of Waco, Texas, knows the pain of watching a loved one battle this cruel disease. Her husband, Abel, served in the army during the Vietnam War and was diagnosed with ALS in 2018. Debbie describes ALS as a death sentence, a sentiment shared by many who have witnessed its devastating effects firsthand.

Abel’s fight against ALS lasted over six years, during which he endured immense physical and emotional challenges. Debbie was his unwavering support, but even she reached a breaking point. She admits that there came a time when she finally had to tell him, I just can’t do this anymore. It was a heart-wrenching admission, but one that she believes he needed to hear, as they both knew it was time.

Studies have shown that veterans are at a higher risk for developing ALS compared to civilians. While the exact cause of this increased risk remains unclear, some experts believe that exposure to various chemicals and materials during overseas deployments could play a role. Paul Kosel, Debbie and Abel’s son-in-law, also a military veteran, emphasizes the importance of speaking out about possible exposures and seeking medical help when necessary. He encourages his fellow veterans to be proactive and mention any relevant information from their service when discussing potential symptoms with healthcare providers.

Recognizing the early signs and symptoms of ALS is crucial in ensuring early intervention. These signs may include weakness in the legs, feet, or hands, difficulty walking or clumsiness, slurred speech or trouble swallowing, muscle twitches or cramps in the arms, shoulders, or tongue, or frequent tripping and falling. Although there is currently no known cure for ALS, early diagnosis and treatment can help maintain muscle function for a longer duration.

As the number of ALS cases among U.S. veterans continues to rise, there is a pressing need for increased awareness, support, and research. By sharing their family’s story, Paul Kosel hopes to encourage other veterans to speak up about their experiences and seek the help they need. He emphasizes the importance of being proactive when it comes to healthcare, particularly for those who have been exposed to potential hazards during military service.

In light of this devastating reality, it is crucial that the government, healthcare professionals, and society as a whole come together to address the rising cases of ALS among U.S. veterans. These brave men and women sacrificed their well-being for the greater good, and it is now our duty to provide them with the support and care they deserve. By raising awareness, advocating for research, and offering assistance, we can help alleviate the burden faced by veterans like Abel and their families, bringing hope to a challenging journey.
