Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant made history on July 17, 2022, when he scored his maiden ODI hundred in a series decider against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. His unbeaten knock of 125 runs off 113 deliveries played a pivotal role in India’s triumph over the hosts, securing a 2-1 series win.
Pant’s remarkable innings came at a crucial moment for India, as they found themselves in trouble early on. Reece Topley’s left-arm seam bowling had once again caused trouble for India’s top order, reducing them to 21-2 after five overs. It was then that Pant stepped up to the crease at number four.
With Suryakumar Yadav back in the pavilion after scoring just 16 runs, Pant found a partner in Hardik Pandya. The duo displayed their ability to rebuild an innings, just like they had done during the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final at the same venue. Pant and Pandya stitched together a crucial 133-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Pant continued his onslaught even after Pandya’s dismissal and went on to reach his maiden ODI hundred. With over seven overs to spare, Pant ensured India crossed the finish line, sealing the series victory on a positive note.
After completing the run chase, Pant celebrated by showing a thumbs-up gesture towards the dressing room. His outstanding performance earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award, while Hardik Pandya was named Player of the Series.
Pant’s century came at a crucial time, as he had faced some scrutiny, particularly in the shortest format of the game. However, his knock against England silenced any doubts about his ability. Since then, Pant has only played three ODIs, with his career-high score coming during the New Zealand tour following the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Unfortunately, Pant has been out of action since a car accident in December 2022 that resulted in multiple surgeries. Although he has been making positive progress in his recovery, his participation in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup in India remains uncertain.
Reflecting on his milestone century, Pant expressed his delight at the achievement. He said, Hopefully I will remember my first ODI century for the rest of my life. But when I was out there, I was just focusing on one ball at a time. When a team is under pressure and you bat like that, that’s what you aspire to do. I enjoy playing in England and will do whatever I can do to keep enjoying my cricket. The more cricket you play, the more experience you get.
