Rise in High School Students Receiving Exam Assistance for Anxiety and Focus Issues

The number of students receiving extra help in their HSC exams due to anxiety disorders and concentration issues has reached a record high. Last year, one in 10 students were granted special provisions to assist them during the exams. School principals attribute the rise to an increase in mental health issues among teenagers. However, they call for better access to health professionals to address the disparity in disability provisions between public and private schools.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), private school students had a higher percentage of students receiving extra assistance in HSC exams compared to public school students. Figures show that 17 percent of private school children were granted additional provisions such as extra time or rest breaks, while only 10 percent of public school students received these provisions.

Over the past five years, there has been a 50 percent increase in the number of students claiming rest breaks for anxiety disorders, concentration issues, or demonstrated pain. In the previous year’s exams, a total of 6,924 students claimed these provisions.

In light of these statistics, it is clear that mental health issues are becoming more prevalent among HSC students. This highlights the importance of addressing and supporting their needs during such a crucial period of their academic journey. It is crucial to ensure that all students, regardless of their school type, have equal access to the necessary resources and provisions.

Principals emphasize the need for better access to health professionals who can provide timely support and assistance to students struggling with anxiety disorders and concentration issues.
