Rise in COVID-19 and Flu: Health Experts Urge Immunization and Caution, US

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — Health experts are urging caution as the holiday season approaches, highlighting the rise in COVID-19 and flu cases. The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has identified the infectious JN.1 strain of COVID-19 as a major concern. With global travel and increased social gatherings, there is a higher risk of transmission.

It’s important to remember that COVID testing might not always accurately detect the virus. You could have the flu or RSV instead. If you’re feeling unwell, it’s crucial to stay away from others, especially during the holidays, warned Madison Schaeffer, director of the NMDOH Hotline.

The increase in cases often follows a pattern where infections begin in Europe, move to the east coast, and eventually reach New Mexico. Schaeffer emphasized the need for immunization, stating, Roll up your sleeves and get vaccinated. It’s a good idea to receive your booster shot before embarking on any holiday travels.

However, Mandy Cohen, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), expressed concern over the low vaccination rates. Only 40% of adults have received their flu shot, and just 18% have received the updated COVID vaccine. Cohen emphasized the importance of staying safe during the holiday season by regularly washing hands and wearing masks.

Schaeffer advised exercising caution when spending time with loved ones who have compromised immune systems, particularly seniors. Wearing a mask is recommended, especially when traveling, such as on flights or visiting crowded locations like doctor’s offices where there may be a high number of ill individuals.

As the holiday season approaches, it is vital to prioritize the health and safety of yourself and those around you. Regular handwashing, wearing masks, and getting vaccinated can significantly reduce the risk of contracting and spreading illnesses.

In these challenging times, it is essential to be mindful of our actions and considerate of others, especially those most vulnerable to respiratory illnesses. Stay informed about the evolving situation and follow the guidelines provided by health experts to ensure a safe and healthy holiday season.

Remember, by taking precautions and prioritizing public health, we can collectively overcome these health challenges and look forward to brighter days ahead.
