An indigenous rights group has urged the government of Arunachal Pradesh to reject the Forest Advisory Committee’s (FAC) recommendation to establish a Community Reserve near the Dibang Multipurpose Project (DMP). The IRAC, which advocates for the welfare of indigenous communities, opposed the proposal as it goes against the interests of local people. The 2880 MW DMP is being constructed by the National Hydropower Corporation on the Dibang River within the Lower Dibang Valley district. In 2014, the FAC recommended that the right bank of the reservoir be declared a National Park for ecological diversity protection. However, the Arunachal Pradesh government rejected the National Park declaration due to “unclassed forest/community forests” status and suggested a Community or Conservation Reserve instead, sparking IRAC’s caution against the community reserve proposal.
