Mumbai, Feb 7 – The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has filed a case against a retired assistant commissioner of police (ACP) and two police officers over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs 2.25 lakh from a woman, according to an official statement on Wednesday.

The accused, retired ACP Sudhir Kalekar, who was previously posted as a senior inspector at Borivali police station, has been booked along with inspector Arvind Ghag and sub-inspector Swapnali Mande.

The case stems from a complaint filed by a 32-year-old female lawyer who accused her husband and in-laws of domestic violence. During the investigation, the complainant requested the return of her jewelry worth Rs 27 lakh from her in-laws.

Allegedly, Mande, who was the investigating officer, demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh on behalf of Ghag and Kalekar to assist the woman in retrieving her jewelry, strengthen her case against her husband and in-laws, and secure a statement recorded under section 164 (5) (A) of the Criminal Procedure Code before a magistrate.

In November 2021, Mande reportedly received Rs 2 lakh from the complainant on behalf of Kalekar and Ghag. Prior to that, she allegedly accepted Rs 25,000 from the woman to purchase a new mobile phone.

However, the accused officers failed to help the complainant retrieve her jewelry after she refused to pay the remaining bribe amount of Rs 3 lakh. Furthermore, they neglected to record her statement before the magistrate, submitting a chargesheet with errors instead.

Realizing she had been deceived, the woman submitted an application against the three police officers to ACB Mumbai and the Special Sessions Court (ACB). On January 24, the court ordered the registration of a case against the trio.

On Tuesday, the woman presented her complaint at ACB Mumbai, resulting in the official registration of the case against Kalekar, Ghag, and Mande under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
