Retired Israeli Generals Advocate for Security and Democracy Amidst Growing Threats

A group of retired Israeli generals has joined forces to form a movement aimed at protecting the country’s security and democracy in the face of mounting challenges. The movement, which draws members from various political leanings, emphasizes that it has no political aspirations but rather seeks to disband once Israel’s security is no longer under threat.

While the protest movement has not taken a clear stance on the Palestinian issue and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, individual members have spoken out. Former Israeli police chief Moshe Karadi highlighted the importance of Israel’s social cohesion and brotherhood in winning wars, lamenting that this cohesion is now crumbling, posing a significant challenge to the country.

The protest movement has shed light on the deep divisions within Israeli society, particularly between those who advocate for a liberal, Western-facing Israel and those who prefer a more religious and conservative approach. These disagreements have had a tangible impact on the military, with reservists pledging to refuse service if proposed reforms move forward, and divisions becoming apparent among regular ranks as well.

In addition to military-related concerns, the retired generals also oppose a draft bill that could grant blanket exemptions from the military draft to ultra-Orthodox Jews. Critics argue that such exemptions, even on a limited scale, are already unfair and that the proposed bill would exacerbate the issue. They also express concern over government ministers publicly denouncing security services or soldiers who appear to oppose the government, which they believe is unraveling the social fabric of the nation.

The country’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has faced criticism for his alleged politicization of the police force. Ben-Gvir has been promised a national guard force that some view as a personal militia, which could further burden an already overstretched police force. A prominent Tel Aviv police commander resigned due to political pressure after clashing with Ben-Gvir over anti-government protests.

Former Shin Bet chief, Yuval Diskin, who served under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has spoken out against the direction in which the government is heading. He believes that Netanyahu, who was previously receptive to the advice of security chiefs, is primarily focused on his own political survival, particularly in light of corruption charges he faces.

While the retired generals have critics who accuse them of using their security credentials to further a political agenda, they assert that their goal is not to oppose the government itself but rather to voice their concerns for the security and well-being of the state. They argue that their extensive experience and sacrifices for the country merit consideration for their perspective.

As the retired generals continue to advocate for security and democracy in Israel, their involvement in mass protests against proposed reforms and lobbying efforts with legislators reflect their commitment to ensuring the best interests of the nation. Their movement highlights the importance of addressing the various challenges facing Israel, while also striving to maintain a balanced and inclusive society.
