Large gatherings during the holidays could spread the JN-1 COVID variant, medical professionals concerned

WASHINGTON — As the holiday season approaches, medical professionals are expressing concern over the potential spread of the JN-1 COVID variant through large gatherings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a rise in respiratory illnesses across the United States, with seventeen states, including Virginia and D.C., reporting high levels of such illnesses. Compounding the issue is the fact that fewer people are vaccinated compared to previous years.

National vaccination rates for the flu vaccine are alarmingly low, with fewer than half of children (43.3%) and adults (42.2%) having received the vaccine. The rates for the new COVID-19 vaccine are even lower, with only 18.3% of adults and 7.8% of children vaccinated. Additionally, despite the availability of an RSV vaccine for adults over 60, only about 17% have taken advantage of it. Infants with RSV face an even bleaker situation, as there is a shortage of treatment options for them.

Simultaneously, hospitalizations due to respiratory illnesses are on the rise. Dr. Mandy Cohen, the Director of the CDC, emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, We don’t wanna see anyone get hospitalized or die from something that has a safe and effective vaccine. Particularly vulnerable populations, such as seniors and children under five, are urged to receive the flu vaccine, as they are at a higher risk for severe outcomes.

Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, health officials are attributing the spike in cases to the subvariant JN-1. The World Health Organization has labeled it a variant of interest. Recent reports from the CDC indicate that JN-1 now accounts for 44% of COVID cases nationwide. However, medical professionals reassure the public that the latest COVID-19 vaccine should offer protection against the worst effects of this new variant.

Dr. William Shaffner, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, explained, The laboratory studies would indicate that our currently updated COVID vaccine does provide protection against severe disease caused by this variant. This reassurance should alleviate concerns about the severity of the JN-1 variant among those who have received the vaccine.

Dr. Andrew Pekosz, a professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, expressed his biggest concern about the upcoming holiday season and big gatherings. He emphasized that it is not too late to get vaccinated, as these respiratory viruses are expected to circulate for a few more weeks. Pekosz advised individuals to get immunized promptly to provide protection for the tail end of the respiratory virus season.

In light of the triple threat posed by respiratory illnesses, experts recommend vulnerable individuals and the immunocompromised, especially those in high-risk age groups, to consider wearing masks again, particularly in the presence of large groups. This precautionary measure aims to protect individuals from the heightened risk of exposure during holiday festivities.

As the holiday season begins, it is crucial to prioritize public health and safety. Vaccination, particularly against flu and COVID-19, is strongly encouraged, as it offers protection against severe illness. Additionally, wearing masks, especially for vulnerable individuals, can help mitigate the spread of respiratory illnesses. By following these precautions, individuals can ensure a safer and healthier holiday season for themselves and their loved ones.
