Environmentalists Demand Action Ahead of Thursday BP Air Permit Hearing

Just over a week after two tank leaks at the BP Whiting Refinery caused foul odors throughout Hammond and Whiting, residents were once again alarmed on Thursday when images of large flames and thick smoke billowing from the refinery’s flare stacks circulated on social media. With three incidents in such a short period of time, concerns and confusion about the refinery’s operations have escalated. In response, environmental activists are calling for action and encouraging community members to attend and speak out at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) public hearing on Thursday regarding BP’s air permit renewal.

The BP Whiting refinery, the largest oil refinery in the Midwest, is seeking an air permit renewal from IDEM. Residents will have the opportunity to express their concerns and ask questions during the meeting, which will be held on February 8 at 6 p.m. in the East Chicago High School Auditorium.

The tank leaks occurred on January 18 and January 23, resulting in the release of benzene and hydrogen sulfide vapors into the air. These toxic chemicals pose significant health risks, including respiratory and central nervous system issues. While BP has been conducting cleanup operations and monitoring the air quality, no elevated readings have been detected so far.

The power outage on Thursday further exacerbated the situation at the refinery, leading to the shutdown of the entire facility and the burning of excess gas to relieve pressure. As a result, the flaring increased, causing the release of even more smoke and flames. The incident prompted the evacuation of employees and the closure of surrounding roads. Fortunately, power has since been restored, and operations have resumed without any further issues.

At a community meeting held in Hammond’s Robertsdale neighborhood on Wednesday, concerns over the tank leaks were already mounting. Ronald Novak, Hammond’s head of Environmental Management, stated that the cleanup process would likely be a long-term endeavor. Many residents expressed their fear and frustration, demanding better communication and accountability from BP.

Carolyn Marsh, a Whiting resident, recalled the moment when she detected strong natural gas odors and feared for her safety. She emphasized the importance of BP being a good neighbor and providing timely and accurate information to the community.

The public comment period for BP’s air permit renewal runs until February 12, and residents can submit their concerns via email to dalogan@idem.IN.gov. More information about the permit process can be found on the IDEM website.

As the hearing approaches, environmentalists and concerned citizens are hopeful that their voices will be heard and that steps will be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the surrounding communities. The incidents at the BP Whiting Refinery have raised important questions about oversight, enforcement, and transparency, and it is crucial that these concerns are addressed adequately.
