Aizawl, Jan 13: Researchers from Mizoram University’s zoology department have made a significant discovery with the identification of a new species of coral snake in the state. The newly found reptile has been named Sinomicrurus gorei, in honor of British India doctor Gore. The research team, led by zoology professor HT Lalremsanga, stumbled upon the new species known locally as Rul?hihna. The snake bears an uncanny resemblance to a Mizo traditional amber necklace called ?hihna. The researchers made this remarkable discovery while studying the skeletal structure and DNA of coral snakes in Mizoram. The findings were recently published in the British science journal, Systematics & Biodiversity.
Lalremsanga expressed his long-held suspicions about Sinomicrurus gorei’s distinction from Sinomicrurus macclellandi, a closely resembling species found in Northeast India. Since 2008, I have suspected that Sinomicrurus gorei is a different species. However, other researchers did not agree with me, Lalremsanga stated. But a recent study revealed significant differences between the two species, including unique patterns, scales, hemipenis, DNA, and skull structures based on a CT-scan.
The researchers also discovered that while Sinomicrurus macclellandi can lay 6-14 eggs at a time, Sinomicrurus gorei only lays up to three eggs. Additionally, Sinomicrurus macclellandi is primarily found in hilly or elevated areas of Mizoram, while Sinomicrurus gorei has been observed in both low-lying and hilly areas.
