New Delhi: Firefighters faced significant challenges during a rescue operation at a fire incident in Pitampura. The Delhi Fire Service worked relentlessly for hours to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of the residents. The major hurdle faced by the firefighting team was the lone staircase serving the entire building, limiting their access to the core of the blaze and hindering their ability to assess the situation.

Low visibility due to the thick smoke made it difficult for the firefighters to locate the source of the fire. The initial team encountered a wall of smoke upon entering the building, which posed a risk of suffocation. Equipped with flashlights and breathing apparatus, the firefighters made their way through the narrow staircase. To overcome the limited access, fire officers placed ladders through neighboring houses to enter the affected building through windows and force open jammed doors.

Ventilation emerged as a critical challenge during the operation. The iron bar door on the terrace, instead of facilitating natural ventilation, consisted of closed steel sheets, ultimately causing the accumulation of smoke. The lack of proper ventilation further exacerbated the situation.

Commenting on the incident, Atul Garg, Director of the Delhi Fire Service, emphasized the consequences of locked terraces during fires. Locked terraces prevent smoke from finding an outlet, leading to staircases being engulfed in smoke. Garg noted that people residing on upper floors are particularly vulnerable in such situations, and rescuing them becomes a priority.

Highlighting another concerning aspect, a fire officer mentioned that residential buildings with a height under 15 meters do not require fire certification. In the case of this particular building, which also fell under the mentioned criteria, inadequate fire safety measures were observed due to the lack of approval from the fire department.

The challenges faced during this rescue operation shed light on the importance of ensuring proper fire safety measures in buildings. Residential areas must prioritize fire certifications and design approvals to prevent avoidable tragedies. Adequate ventilation systems and accessible exits are crucial in mitigating the impact of fires.

It is essential for residents to be aware of the potential risks and take appropriate measures to prevent fires, such as regular maintenance of fire safety equipment and following basic fire safety protocols. Fire incidents can happen unexpectedly, and being prepared is the first line of defense.

As the Delhi Fire Service continues to analyze the incident and work towards enhanced fire safety standards, it is a reminder for everyone to prioritize safety and be proactive in preventing such occurrences. By taking collective responsibility and investing in fire safety, we can ensure the well-being of ourselves and our communities.
