‘Letters: South Carolina should try ranked-choice voting’

Some voters in South Carolina are expressing concerns about the potential implications of their vote in the upcoming Republican presidential primary. These concerns stem from uncertainties surrounding the eligibility of Donald Trump due to a possible court ruling and the possibility of certain lower-polling candidates withdrawing before Election Day.

Ranked-choice voting, also known as instant-runoff voting, could offer a solution to these concerns. This voting system eliminates the need for costly and inconvenient runoff elections or party-paid conventions. Despite its potential benefits, many Republican state senators and representatives in South Carolina are opposed to implementing ranked-choice voting.

One of the arguments against this voting system is that it is too complicated for voters to rank the candidates in order. However, it’s worth noting that Australia has been successfully using preferential voting, a similar system to ranked-choice voting, since 1918. This raises the question of whether some in the state Republican Party view South Carolinians as intellectually inferior to Australians.

Critics argue that the opposition to ranked-choice voting is driven by a desire to maintain power without candidate majority support. However, proponents of ranked-choice voting argue that it is a more efficient and fair voting method that South Carolinians deserve.

In other news, the State Ports Authority in South Carolina is considering purchasing the recently closed paper mill near the North Charleston Port Terminal. With the potential for Charleston to become a dominant player in East Coast container shipping, this move seems logical. However, some are questioning the use of taxpayer money to fund this purchase, especially considering the previous investment in the Hugh Leatherman Terminal.

Governor Henry McMaster’s plan to contribute about $55 million in state funds toward the mill’s purchase is raising concerns. Taxpayers have already contributed significant funds to the construction of the Hugh Leatherman Terminal and its supporting infrastructure. Critics argue that until the State Ports Authority can demonstrate successful operation of the terminal, they should not receive additional funding.

On a more personal note, an immigrant shares their story of coming to the United States and the positive contributions they and their family have made. They debunk the claim that immigrants, whether legal or illegal, are poisoning the country. Instead, they highlight how immigrants enhance the fabric of American society and argue that it is the divisive rhetoric of some politicians that truly has a negative impact.

These letters illustrate the diverse opinions and concerns of South Carolina residents on topics such as voting systems and taxpayer-funded projects. It is clear that there is a need for open dialogue and careful consideration of these issues to ensure fair representation and responsible use of public funds in the state.
