Republican Candidates Clash Over Trump’s Absence in 2024 Debate

Five primary Republican presidential candidates engaged in a heated debate in Miami, as they sought to position themselves as viable alternatives to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 election. The absence of Trump, who chose to hold a rally in Hialeah, Florida instead, added an even more intense spotlight to the event.

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, tech and finance entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina all participated in the debate. Despite Trump’s leading position in the polls, this was the third time he skipped a debate, emphasizing his growing frustration with what he called unwatchable events.

The debate kicked off with a crucial question: why should these candidates be chosen over Trump? Nikki Haley wasted no time in voicing her opinion, stating, I can tell you that I think he was the right president at the right time, but I don’t think he’s the right president now. It was a clear departure from her previous support of the former president.

Governor Ron DeSantis used the opportunity to link Trump to the recent losses suffered by Republicans in Tuesday’s elections. He asserted, He said Republicans were gonna get tired of winning, but we saw last night – I’m sick of Republicans losing! DeSantis’s comment aimed to position himself as the candidate who could reverse the party’s current trajectory.

Chris Christie reminded the audience of Trump’s ongoing legal challenges, warning that anyone facing such obstacles would be unfit to lead the party or the country. These different perspectives highlighted the party’s internal divisions and the varying opinions on the future of Republican leadership.

When it came to international issues, all candidates expressed their unequivocal support for Israel in its fight against Hamas. They also criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of the U.S. position relating to Israel. Despite their alignment on this matter, Governors DeSantis and Haley clashed over their policy towards China. Both accused each other of being too friendly to the Asian country due to allowing Chinese investments in their respective states during their terms as governors.

Throughout the debate, sparks flew between Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy took a personal jibe at Haley by mentioning that her daughter is a user of TikTok, leading to an angered response from Haley who told him to leave my daughter out of your voice and referred to him as scum. It was a heated moment that showcased the intensity of the competition between the candidates.

According to an NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll released in October, DeSantis and Haley were both polling at 16% among likely caucus-goers in Iowa. This was a noticeable increase for DeSantis from his previous 19% in August, while Haley experienced a significant jump from her previous 6%. Trump maintained a commanding lead with 43% support.

The next GOP primary debate is scheduled for December 6th in Alabama. It remains to be seen how the dynamics within the party will continue to evolve leading up to the 2024 election, as candidates strive to differentiate themselves from Donald Trump and capture the attention and support of Republican voters.
