Series of Heinous Crimes Against Women Emerge Amidst Manipur Violence

A wave of gruesome crimes against women has unfolded in Manipur, following the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3. Disturbing reports of violence, including rape and murder, have come to light, leaving the state in shock and anguish. The recent viral video incident, which captured the disrobing and parading of women, has only served to highlight the growing atrocities against women in the region.

Adding to the horror, a tragic incident occurred in Imphal East on May 6, where a 45-year-old woman was stripped and set ablaze. Her semi-charred, unclothed body was discovered by a pastor from Pheitaiching village. The village had been attacked the previous day by a large mob led by armed men wearing black shirts. Shockingly, allegations suggest that Manipur Police commandos accompanied the attackers, raising concerns about the authorities’ failure to protect innocent civilians.

As the violence escalates, more instances of violence against women belonging to the Kuki-Zo community have been brought to light. 10 Manipur legislators, including seven from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have released a statement highlighting additional cases of rape and murder within their community since the outbreak of ethnic violence. One such incident involved the rape, torture, and murder of two women in Imphal East on May 4. The victims, employed at a car washing center, were subjected to brutal torture by a mob of 100 to 200 people. Tragically, their bodies have yet to be recovered, adding to the distress and heartache endured by their grieving families.

The ongoing ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities has ravaged Manipur, resulting in over 140 casualties and displacing more than 54,000 individuals. This conflict has further exacerbated tensions and rendered women in the region vulnerable to horrific crimes.

The authorities are facing mounting pressure to bring justice to the victims and end the violence. The graphic image of the charred body of the 45-year-old woman has circulated on social media platforms, garnering outrage from the public and demands for immediate action.

The situation calls for a balanced approach, taking into account the viewpoints and perspectives of all parties involved. It is crucial to address the underlying causes of the ethnic violence and work towards establishing peace and harmony in the region. Efforts must be made to protect the rights and safety of women, ensuring their voices are heard and valued.

As Manipur grapples with these disturbing crimes against women, it is imperative that the government, law enforcement agencies, and the community unite to put an end to the violence and restore a sense of security for all residents.
