Rep. Jeff Jackson, a member of Congress from North Carolina, has announced that he will be running for the position of North Carolina Attorney General. This decision comes after new congressional district maps were passed by the N.C. General Assembly, effectively drawing Jackson out of his current district.
Jackson, a Democrat who won his current district in 2022 by 15 points, expressed his frustration with the redrawing of the district in a video posted on social media. He accused the politicians responsible of engaging in political corruption, emphasizing his commitment to fight against such corruption as North Carolina’s attorney general.
The new congressional maps, which have been passed under new redistricting rules, are expected to result in a net gain of at least three seats for Republicans in the state’s congressional delegation. This decision was made following a 5-2 ruling by the Republican majority on the N.C. Supreme Court, which stated that state courts did not have oversight in redistricting.
Jackson, who gained fame for his videos on TikTok documenting his experiences in Congress, is likely to face Rep. Dan Bishop in the general election for attorney general. Bishop, an ally of former President Donald Trump, garnered controversy for voting to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The primary elections in North Carolina are scheduled for March 5, 2024. As the race for the next attorney general unfolds, it remains to be seen how Jackson’s candidacy will impact the political landscape and whether he can use his position to address the issue of political corruption he has highlighted.
