The memorial service and funeral details of veteran photographer Dr Peter Magubane have been confirmed. Magubane, who captured iconic images of South Africa’s history, passed away at the age of 91 in Johannesburg on Monday, January 1, 2023. The South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) announced that a memorial service will be held at the Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Soweto, Gauteng on Monday, January 8 at 14:00. The funeral will take place on Wednesday, January 10, with Dr Magubane being given an Official Provincial Funeral Category 2, which has been approved by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi recognized the significance of President Ramaphosa’s decision, stating, This is a well-deserved recognition for this fearless activist and national treasure who chronicled and shared with the world the black majority’s struggle against oppression and injustice. He did not just give a voice to the downtrodden majority; he also contributed to the fall of the apartheid dictatorship.
