Prominent Indian educationalist P Chitran Namboothiripad has passed away at the age of 103 due to age-related ailments, according to family sources. Namboothiripad was well known in Kerala for his progressive views and contributions to the education sector, where he served as the Director of Public Instructions and was the secretary of the Kerala Kalamandalam. Despite his age, he continued to make regular voyages to the Himalayas, undertaking over 30 trips to the region. Namboothiripad was an active participant in student movements during his higher studies, particularly with Left-wing outfits. After completing his studies, he established a school in his village, which he later handed over to the state government for a nominal sum of one rupee.
Namboothiripad was an accomplished writer, and his travelogue Punyahimalayam, detailing his Himalayan voyages, was well-received among readers. He also played a pivotal role in shaping the state youth festival, which has become Asia’s largest youth art event.
Namboothiripad was widely mourned by many, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who praised his contributions to Kerala’s progressivism and described his demise as a significant loss. Vijayan also acknowledged his services as the education joint director and school youth festival organizer.
