Redmond High Claims Its First Ever Oregon Wrestling Classic Title

REDMOND — In a historic moment for Redmond High School, the boys wrestling team secured their first-ever championship title at the Oregon Classic, a dual-meet wrestling tournament that has been running for 40 years. Displaying exemplary skill and determination, the Panthers triumphed over all their opponents throughout the two-day event, culminating in a nail-biting 33-32 victory against Dallas in the finals.

The Panthers displayed their dominance by winning all five of their duals, defeating notable teams such as Summit, Ridgeview, Bend High, Crater, Thurston, and finally Dallas to claim the coveted Class 5A title. This remarkable achievement marks a milestone in the school’s wrestling history.

These kids have been answering the bell every day, declared an elated Redmond wrestling coach Kris Davis. They come ready to work every day. They know what it takes to be winners. Today we showed that we had to grind it out. We had to beat some really tough teams in order to win this title, which means so much to our kids because they know that they are earning it.

The triumph extended beyond Redmond High, as other local wrestling teams showcased their mettle at the Oregon Classic. Mountain View achieved an impressive fourth-place finish, while Bend secured sixth place and Ridgeview snatched eighth place in the competition.

In the Class 4A category, Crook County showcased their skills by advancing to the championship round. However, they fell short against Sweet Home, losing 40-21 in the finals. Despite the setback, their performance highlighted their prowess on the wrestling mat.

Culver also left their mark on the tournament, reaching the semifinals of the 2A/1A field. Although they were defeated by the eventual champion, Willamina, Culver rebounded by defeating Toledo 51-30 to secure a respectable third-place finish.

Meanwhile, La Pine, competing in Class 3A, gave a commendable performance by finishing in fourth place. The Hawks kicked off Saturday with a resounding 54-27 win over Coquille but faced defeat at the hands of Burns, who went on to clinch the championship. In a hard-fought dual against Banks, where all but one match ended in a pin, La Pine fell short.

It was not only the boys who excelled at the Oregon Classic. The Redmond girls’ team showcased their skills and determination by securing a notable fifth-place finish. Their hard-fought victory over Tillamook in the fifth-place match, with a score of 42-39, demonstrated their dedication and talent.

As the competition unfolded, the excitement and passion of the wrestlers electrified the arena. Each match highlighted the immense talent and relentless effort required to compete at the highest level. Redmond High School’s victory serves as an inspiration to the entire community and a testament to the dedication of their student-athletes.
